Every year I tell myself: this is going to be your year Ciarra. This will be the year you turn your fitness and cookie eating habits around and work for the body you’ve always wanted. This will be the year that your confidence will reach an all-time high and you’ll fall in love with the way you look each and every day because, well…you earned it.

But, it never truly happens this way.

As I sit on the train heading to work, I reflect on the progress I’ve made with my annual New Year’s resolution; to increase my workouts to at least three to five times a week.

Merely 16 days into the new year, I shamefully admit that I have properly exercised twice in total. My body is not nearly where I want it to be nor has my non-narcissistical self-love increased in the slightest.

The cycle repeats itself and I once again question why.

Though I have clearly yet to actually work for the body I want, I have instead learned that it is just as important to change the way you think about yourself as it is to change your fitness habits to truly achieve self love. Confidence does not come from your physical appearance. Rather, confidence is a product of one’s mental state, the psychological response to one’s self.

And, though I always promote leading a healthier lifestyle (even if I did have a cupcake for lunch just the other day), I also want to remind people that none of this can be achieved if we don’t first focus on our minds and retrain the way we see ourselves in relation to others.

Here’s a collection of some of my favorite daily reminders. Do you have a favorite? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. Confidence really does have to come from the inside! This is such a valuable lesson and definitely gives rise to progress because it allows us to approach our goals with a positive attitude. Such a wonderful post, and I wish you the best of luck with your resolutions xox

  3. I love the quotes!! Brilliant write up!! I admire your style of writing. You have addressed issues like cat calling, slut shaming etc without actually pointing them out. Self Love and self confidence are things you require to lead a happy and content life.
Recently, even I wrote an article on self worth. I would be absolutely delighted to know your opinion on the same. Please do check it out.
