Leave it to Versace to make a lasting impression on the Academy Awards’ Red Carpet.
Flashback to the 2012 Academy Awards:
Crowds lined the crimson red, velvet carpet awaiting the arrival of their favorite celebrity as photographers hastily squeezed through the abundance of flowing gowns and perfectly tailored suits. Gwenyth Paltrow stood tall in a white sheath Tom Ford dress and cape while Jennifer Lopez stepped into the spotlight in a body-sculpting Zuhair Murad silhouette.

Just when the best-dressed nominees were thought to be determined, Angelina Jolie’s right leg poked out of a long, black Atelier Versace design, sending the fashion world into a thigh-high slit frenzy.
Needless to say, Hollywood’s red carpets would NEVER be the same.

For the next four years, renditions of “the slit” swept both the red carpets and best-dressed lists of almost every award show from the Oscars to the MTV Music Awards.
Fashion icons like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez donned the hottest trend, exemplifying the prominence of the slit.

Fast forward to the 88th Annual Academy Awards:
Crowds lined the crimson red, velvet carpet awaiting the arrival of their favorite celebrity as photographers hastily squeezed through the abundance of flowing gowns and perfectly tailored suits. Actress, Rachel McAdams, stood tall in an emerald green August Getty Atelier gown, while nominee, Rooney Mara, opted for a delicately detailed Givenchy design. Along with other celebrities, both gowns allowed their toned legs to make an appearance with thigh-high slits.

However, the most fascinating rendition came from Jennifer Garner, who brought the authentic design back to the Academy Awards’ Red Carpet in a elegant, black, one-shoulder Atelier Versace gown that strikingly resembled Jolie’s gown in 2012. All eyes were on Garner as she flew solo to the Oscars for the first time since her divorce with actor, Ben Affleck. But, rather than flaunting the leggy trend, Garner’s Atelier Versace silhouette eluded to the design with a subverted slit that allowed her strappy heels and bare leg to peek through the fabric.

With a cinched waist, sequined sweetheart neckline, and a flowing train following behind, the actress’ gown made a statement for not only the American beauty but for the Italian fashion house as well, proving that it’s 2016 and the Versace slit is here to stay.
When it comes to trendsetting, one can always count on Versace.
